A longtime Mequon advertising company with Milwaukee roots has closed after 63 years in business.

Ed Bristol Advertising and Printing has worked with local shopping centers, including Brookfield Square and Bayshore, as well as clients nationwide.

Ed Bristol and his wife, Gloria, founded Ed Bristol Advertising Inc. in 1959. Bristol became a cartoonist after a four-year stint with the United States Air Force. He then became an ad salesman and designer at Northwest News, a newspaper that was distributed door-to-door to 25,000 people on Milwaukee’s northwest side.

Bristol eventually purchased Northwest News and opened the advertising company. The Bristols moved the business from 76th and Hampton in Milwaukee to Mequon in 1996.

The company adapted as printing technologies evolved and doubled its clients at the onset of the internet.

Ed Bristol Advertising and Printing has been sold to New Berlin company Graphicolor Printing.

Mark Bristol, president at EBA Printing, said he’s worked for his dad since he was 16. He’s been running the company for the last 15 years.

“My dad died 10 years ago, but he would still come in and open up the mail,” Bristol said.

Bristol said before selling the business, his 90-year-old mother would come in twice a week to work on payroll and other tasks. After three of the company’s 11 employees recently retired, the 63-year-old Bristol said “it was just time.”

Bristol wanted to sell his list of clients to another great company, so he chose Graphicolor Printing, based in New Berlin.

“I wanted to hand it off to somebody who had a good reputation,” he said.
